A standard dental cleaning does a great job of maintaining your oral health, but for some patients, it is not enough on its own. When plaque and tartar work their way below the gumline, routine cleaning tools cannot fully reach them. Left untreated, this buildup can trigger inflammation, damage the tissue and bone supporting your teeth, and set the stage for progressive gum disease.
If Dr. Sherry detects signs of gingivitis or early periodontal disease during your exam, she may recommend a deeper level of cleaning known as scaling and root planing. This treatment is specifically designed to address what a standard cleaning cannot, and catching it early gives us the best chance of reversing the damage before it progresses further.
Gingivitis is the earliest stage of periodontal disease. It develops when bacteria-filled plaque accumulates along and below the gumline, causing the surrounding tissue to become red, swollen, and irritated. You may also notice that your gums bleed easily when brushing or flossing. The good news is that gingivitis is reversible, but only when it is treated promptly.
If gingivitis is not addressed, the infection can advance into more serious stages of periodontal disease. At this point, the damage to the surrounding tissue and bone becomes harder to undo, and ongoing management with more frequent deep cleanings becomes necessary. This is why staying on top of your routine exams matters, we want to catch the signs early, before the situation becomes more complex to treat.
Scaling and root planing is a two-part deep cleaning process that targets buildup both at and beneath the gumline, areas that a standard cleaning simply does not reach. During the scaling portion, your hygienist carefully removes plaque and tartar deposits that have collected on the tooth surfaces and along the gum pockets. This buildup is a primary driver of the inflammation, bleeding, and bad breath associated with gum disease.
The root planing portion of the treatment involves smoothing out the surfaces of the tooth roots. Over time, rough root surfaces make it easier for bacteria to cling and accumulate. By smoothing them out, we encourage the gum tissue to reattach more securely to the tooth, reducing the depth of the pockets where harmful bacteria thrive. Together, these two steps form the foundation of non-surgical periodontal therapy.
At Sherry Dental, we use ultrasonic scaling technology to make your periodontal cleaning as efficient and comfortable as possible. Rather than relying solely on manual instruments, the ultrasonic scaler uses high-frequency vibrations to break up and remove stubborn deposits quickly and effectively. Many patients find this approach more comfortable than traditional methods, and it allows us to complete the treatment in less time.
Ultrasonic scaling can also be more effective at disrupting the bacteria found deep in gum pockets, which contributes to better outcomes over time. Depending on the severity of your condition, Dr. Sherry may recommend scheduling these deep cleanings every three to four months rather than the standard six-month interval, to keep your gum disease under control and prevent it from worsening.
It is normal to experience some mild sensitivity or tenderness in the gums for a few days following a periodontal cleaning. Your gums may also look slightly different as they begin to heal and reattach. Dr. Sherry will provide you with aftercare instructions and let you know what to watch for as you recover.
Most patients notice a meaningful improvement in their gum health over the weeks that follow. Reducing inflammation, eliminating deep bacterial deposits, and tightening the gum tissue around your teeth all contribute to a healthier, more stable foundation for your smile. With consistent care and the right cleaning schedule, many patients are able to successfully manage periodontal disease and protect their teeth for the long term.
